Choosing the Best Location for Your UK Rust Server Base

If you're tired of being door camped, constantly raided, or struggling to find resources, the issue might be the location of your base. Don't worry, I've got you covered. In this post, we will explore various map zones, highlight risky and secure building spots, and share some of the top locations to construct your base in Rust.

Map Regions

Each player commences their journey from the same general area on every server, referred to as the spawn zone. This zone's position changes with each map.

Past this initial area, the map is divided into tiers, a structure that has been in place since a 2017 update.

Progressing further into the map leads to the discovery of higher-tier locations such as the launch site, providing richer resources while also attracting more heavily equipped players.

When deciding on a building location, keep in mind:

The farther you venture from the spawn zone, the more formidable opponents you will face.

If you opt to remain near the spawn zone, anticipate a higher volume of pedestrian traffic and competition.

Risks

The size and activity level of your group will significantly influence the most suitable building locations. While Rust permits building anywhere, certain areas pose higher risks than others. Expect potential offline raids or constant door camping if you choose to build in a hot spot.

Secure Areas

To avoid frequent attacks and peacefully gather resources, consider these secure building locations:

  • Wooded Areas: Dense tree coverage can naturally conceal your base, making it challenging for enemies to detect.

  • Mountains: Constructing on a mountainside can provide strategic advantages and offer protection from certain angles.

  • Islands: Securing a small island allows better control over entry points, creating a safer refuge for your base.

  • Perimeter of the Map: These regions typically experience less traffic, enabling a more tranquil living environment.

Avoiding Dangerous Areas

If you wish to steer clear of trouble, make sure to stay away from the following high-risk locations:

  • Avoiding Major Landmarks: Places like launch sites, airfields, and other prominent

monuments tend to attract well-equipped players.

  • Steer Clear of Roads and Waterways: These are commonly travelled paths, increasing

the likelihood of encountering other players.

  • Avoid Central Map Areas: The central zones are typically more densely populated and

    fiercely contested.

Considering the Elevation

When deciding on the height of your base, it is important to understand the implications:

  • Low Structures: Building at a lower level can help conceal your base, reducing the risk of being raided. However, keep in mind that opponents will have the upper hand in PvP battles. Lower structures are suitable for smaller bases that you want to keep hidden.

  • High Structures: Constructing at a higher level offers a strong defensive position and strategic advantages in PvP encounters, but it also makes your base more conspicuous. Tall bases provide good defence but also attract attention more easily.

Risky Locations for Smaller Groups

There are certain areas in Rust that pose higher risks for smaller groups. Here's why you should avoid them:

  • Ice Lakes: These flat terrains are perfect for large compounds where terrain is not a hindrance, but they tend to draw mega clans. Unless you are part of a large group, it's better to avoid these areas.

  • Islands: While they may seem like tranquil retreats, clans often dominate these spaces and may wall off the entire island. Building on islands can make you an easy target for established groups.

  • Flat & Shallow Areas: The flat terrain appeals to larger groups for base-building. Unless you’re planning to go big, these places are best avoided to keep a low profile.

Monuments: High-Risk Zones

Building near major monuments like the launch site, military tunnels, oil rigs, and stores poses significant risks:

  • Monuments: With gas stations becoming more sought after due to recycling machine buffs, they constantly attract players. Building near these will mean more players passing by your base and a higher chance of getting noticed as a raid target.

  • New Rocks: The recent map generation update added rock formations that are perfect for building compact, secure bases. But they are in high demand, so expect competition from larger groups.

  • Spawn Beach: Building here will lead to constant harassment from freshly spawned players. I would say, door camping and quick raids are the most common in these areas.

While these spots can all potentially be high-risk, they are not off-limits if you’re looking for a challenge.  Some of these locations can be a lot of fun if you’re up for the extra risk!

Safer Locations

There is no truly “safe” spot in Rust, but you can reduce your risk by building in more out-of-the-way areas. Spend some time thinking through how players typically move across the map. Even a good spot can become risky if it is a popular route between monuments or clan bases, consider the number of players who might pass by and what kind of gear they will likely have. In starter areas, you’ll see more people but they’re generally under- geared whereas in remote areas, you’ll encounter fewer players but they’ll often be well-prepared.

  • Cliffs: Consider cliffs if you want a safer location to increase your chances of remaining undetected. Cliffs can provide cover from various directions and are typically away from the main routes, making them a more discreet choice for building.

  • Rivers: When constructing close to water, you can create a base resembling a farm. It's typical to find hemp or tea farms in such locations, so designing a base to mimic one could deter raiders by making them believe it's not worth their while.

  • Forests: Trees provide natural cover and camouflage, reducing the chance of your base being spotted. Plus, You will have plenty of wood and mushrooms nearby.

  • Desert Pillar Formations: In the desert, there are numerous pillar rocks that provide cover for your base, keeping it hidden from view. Constructing your base around these pillars can be advantageous, as the desert generally sees less foot traffic than the forest biome.

Snow Biome: Safer Locations

This biome experiences lower foot traffic because players require cold protection to access it and its harsh nights deter many from venturing in.

Nevertheless, it is not uncommon for players to visit quickly for farming purposes, so it is advisable to refrain from constructing structures in open areas abundant with ores. Instead, concealing your base behind a rock or in lower terrain can offer an ideal hideout.

  • Icebergs: Building on icebergs is not recommended due to their exposure, but it is possible to construct a base at the lower part facing the ocean, providing concealment from the land. Your presence will only be visible to passing ships, offering some privacy. Accessing the location without a boat may be challenging, but it could reduce the risk of being door-camped.

Strategic Sites

If you are more focused on strategic positioning rather than the inherent safety risks of the base, here are some crucial locations to consider.

  • Rivers & Lakes: Building near clean water is a smart choice. This not only guarantees a dependable supply of drinking water and the potential for future agriculture, but also creates the perception to other players that your base is less threatening, as they might see it as a farming establishment.

  • Safe Zones: These areas provide valuable advantages such as a secure location to relax, trade, and recycle between missions, as well as access to vehicles. The presence of these amenities nearby can facilitate initial advancement and offer secure spots for rapid recharging.

  • Snow Border: This location is perfect for gathering resources, providing wood from the nearby forest and granting access to stone, metal, and sulphur nodes in the snow biome. Establishing your base here can expedite the construction and enhancement process due to the readily available resources.

  • Cave Bases: If you favour a more hidden location, underground bases are an excellent choice. They are difficult to raid but can pose challenges in defending during online attacks, necessitating strategic planning. The caves located in the lower level of the silo hole allow for the passage of wires from the bottom to the top to connect to a power source, facilitating the activation of defenses and utilities below ground. A well-planned underground base can serve as a stronghold, yet daily living in such a setup can be demanding.

  • Marshes/Swamps: Despite being unknown to many players, swamps have guaranteed sulphur spawns on the ground, making them a great location for gathering resources. Establishing a base in this area can be a strategic decision if you require swift access to sulphur at the beginning.

  • Coastal Area: If you prioritize mobility, think about constructing your base by the coast. Living near the ocean provides quick access to the entire map by boat, opportunities for fishing to earn scrap regularly, and the chance to establish a water pump and purifier for farming purposes.

Searching for Key Locations

Keep in mind that a location loses its value if there is a significant presence of other players nearby. Thoroughly survey the surroundings to avoid being within view of a clan or settlement before establishing your base.

I trust that these pointers will be beneficial during your exploration of the Rust world on the UK Rust server.
